Litterbugs cost Rappahannock Couniy $8,843 and Virginia motorists $2,102,367 last year, despite the best efforts of many organizations and individuals to combat the problem, the state Department of Highways and Transportation said today.
Thai's the amount the department spent to pick up trash from roadsides, medians, rest areas, and waysides.
Expressing the cost in another way, the department said the job took 305.207 manhours of work, or the equivalent of some 7,630 work weeks.
The dollar expense represented an increase of $558,000 over the previous year. But the department said that didn't necessarily reflect a comparable growth in the litter problem, since labor and truck fuel costs were higher and more effort was devoted to litter collection in some areas. "The most frustrating part of this whole problem is that money spent to pick up trash buys virtually nothing of lasting value to the public," says C. O. Leigh, the department's highway maintenance engineer. If it weren’t spent for litter, he said, the money could be used for road and bridge improvements.
