The Wakefield School tennis program has gotten off to a good start in its first year of inter-scholastic competition.
Coached by Hunt Harris, a teacher and counsellor at the school and an internationally competetive player and coach before coming to Wakefield, the varsity and junior varsity teams have compiled an overall record of 4-2-1 midway through the season.
The boys’ varsity, led by senior Chris White at no. 1 singles, defeated R.M.A. twice, each time by a score of 6-3. Frans Hansen and Todd Landis each had critical victories. The only loss the varsity has suffered so far was at the hands of Blue Ridge School, 8-1.
The Owls have a tough schedule this week, facing Handley, Episcopal High School in Alexandria, and Woodberry Forest, all top teams in their respective leagues.
The girls’ varsity has played two matches, tying R.M.A. 2-2 in their first, and losing to an experienced St. Anne-Belfield team in Charlottesville, 5-1. Junior Marie Brooke heads the girls squad.
The boys j.v. team has an undefeated record of 2-0, having twice defeated R.M.A. by a score of 7-2. They face Grimes School and Highland School in other matches this season.
