He also said Friday that Sen. Wilder was not holding him “personally accountable” for the defeat of the two bills. Del. Pickett said he did not vote on either bill, since he was not a member of the committees that defeated them.
Despite his announcement Tuesday, Del. Pickett said he is still confident that a Democrat can be elected to the Senate seat now held by Harry F. Byrd Jr. (I-Va.), who said last year he will not seek another term.
Mr. Ridley said Del. Pickett reached his decision in Virginia Beach Monday morning and that he spoke to Governor Robb on the subject later in the day. The Governor’s press spokesman George Stoddart could not be reached for comment on what role the Governor played in the decision.
Rep. Trible, who is expected to receive the GOP nomination in Richmond during the party’s state convention, released a one paragraph statement Tuesday on Del. Pickett’s action.
