Democrat Owen B. Pickett (Virginia Beach) announced Tuesday that he is dropping out of the U. S. Senate race, an action which leaves Democrats with no major candidate a month before their state nominating convention in Roanoke.
Mr. Pickett had said Friday on a visit to Warrenton that he was optimistic about his chances to win the nomination and the election.
In a statement released by his campaign staff in Richmond Tuesday, the 51-yearold lawyer and accountant said "events and developments of recent weeks have convinced me that there may be others more able to unify the Democratic party and reassemble the coalition that contributed so mightily to last year’s success.” — Mr. Pickett, a 10-year veteran of the House of Delegates, made his announcement almost a week after he released his delegates to the convention, allowing them their freedom to choose the best candidate to oppose Rep.
