Old Mills
"The Indians taught us how to grow corn and corn became the chief crop. Corn was fed to everything tin the place, and that required mills. We had seven mills from upper Washington down to Rock Mills.
"Corn was fed to the people - cracked corn, hominy made from Hint com; it was fed to the fowls; to the hogs; to the cattle everything. The main towns then were: Washington. Sperrvville. Flint Hill. Amissville, Woodville, Gaines' Cross Road, and Sandy Hook.
"For the dogs and cats, and fowls that 's all we had - ground meal and milk. They didn't have dog food or cat food in those days.
"The mill was built very sturdily on the side of the river and naturally all of them were built along the same style as you see down here (in Washington).
