"Why the houses were so clean - I'll never understand. There were no closets hut there were cupboards. And they must have kept the overflow in the sheds. Also, they just didn't have that many things to keep up with.
"These were the poorer people in the mountains - the ones who couldn't afford to buy land. The mountain land was free - it wasn't considered anything at all.
"1 went to one home that had two stories - it was built over a spring and the downstairs was the spring house. The baby was kept downstairs and of course that was a perfect place for the baby - it was nice and cool and the sound of running water coming from the spring kept him calm.
"The first fruit stands that were along here were because of the mountain children. They would come down at berrv time with their buckets and just stand there and the people who came along would be glad enough for fresh strawberries or blackberries - any kind of berry.
"In the fall they had chestnuts and they sold like hotcakes. They even had little bunches of flowers - wildflowers. I know the anemone was one of the ones they always could sell.
"They (the mountain • people) were good parents. They stood behind the teachers and whatever the teacher said was law."
