“Usually people bui+t their homes close to the river where they could get in and out. Many a person was stranded at different times due to a road that was impassable. and everyone was welcome. Sometimes you would have houses filled up with people waiting for the rivers to run down. Of course, in the winter time you crossed on the ice."

“Everyone rode horseback. The women rode side-saddle - they wouldn't dare ride astride. And I think I was one of the first women to ride astride, very much against the rules. 1 rode ten miles to school - five miles up and five miles back. But f was one of the blessed ones. Others had to walk, but we had horses. In fact, we had two horses, so if one got sick I could use the other one.
"Now if the roads got too impassable, father made me ride a mule. That was one thing I did hate to do - ride a mule to school. Everybody laughed at me.
"Why did I ride a mule? Because a mule could get his foot out of the mud quicker than a horse. A horse would get mired in the mud and there he would stay until he felt like he wanted to go. But a mule would always go.
"1 never missed a day of school for several years until the flu epidemic came along and I missed several days due to flu."
