Any way you cut it, the nation's economy and the recession are likely to be the overriding issues in this year’s senatorial, congressional and House of Delegates elections.
Democrats will be trying to hang the economic troubles around the necks of the Republicans, while the Republicans will be raising spectres of all sorts of liberal horrors if the Democrats win. They will also be insisting the recession is all the Democrats’ fault in the first place.
It is this last contention which has caused me considerable worry in recent days. I have spent many thoughtful moments reflecting on the unkind fate of Ike. Dick and Jerry.
I am referring, of course, to Presidents Dwight Eisenhower. Richard Nixon and Jerry Ford. Unfortunately these gentlemen, good Republicans all, seem to have slipped through the cracks in their party's memory. They have become, in effect, nonpersons.
Their banishment has come about in this manner.
