In the fall of 1826 a cancer broke out on my father's neck. He employed three or four doctors, but it grew rapidly worse, until death came to his relief, which occurred on the 26th of June, 1827.

Lost Best Friend

Here my First troubles commenced; although I was young I felt that I had lost my best friend. He left a widowed mother without means, and two children to support. My father had gotten into pecuniary difficulties by going his brother’s security, which with his own individual debts and doctor’s bill, took the entire property my father left. I was then brought to know what it was to be in want, but my mother by her industry kept us in comfortable circumstances. She got as much weaving as she could do, she often wove until ten o'clock at night.
