At last week’s Washington town council meeting, residents expressed concern over youngsters riding bikes in the town. The combination of youngsters ignorant of bicycle safety and motorists who don’t always observe town speed limits could be a disastrous one. The council agreed that the answer to the problem was an emphasis on safety, rather than a restriction of young bike riders. We all want to have a town where children can play freely and enjoy the summer. Parents are responsible for seeing that their children are aware of safe bicycle procedures and do not pose a hazard to themselves or motorists swerving to avoid them. We present for town youngsters - and all Rappahannock bicyclists, young and adult - a brief review of some basic safe riding habits, with this suggestion: a bike clinic or a summer bicycle rodeo would be a perfect project for a civic group or church to sponsor.
