While the classes of 30 each were large by our standards for such young children, it was clear from the activities and materials I saw (which 1 discussed with the head of the school, a mature woman who spoke English) that the children were enjoying themselves, were being taught by enthusiastic, energetic teachers and were learning comparatively what kindergarten children would learn in a U. S. school. The children wear uniforms, arrive at school near 8:30, bring their lunches and leave at 2:00 p.m. No naps. They pay 100 yen a month - about S25.00.
