what a great help and essential part of the operation the grandmother contributes. Before Kyoko was married and after she finished college, she worked with her parents too. A son also worked in the business before he finished college and left home for another city. This seems to be a remarkably harmonious and happy family, as we had noted on our previous visit.
Typical Home
Kyoko’s parents’ house is a typical Japanese one in many ways - although not so recently built as many one sees. It is about 30x25 feet, separated into four rooms and a bath on the first floor and entered at the center with a hall for removal of shoes. There are also four rooms on the upper floor. The doors slide and the floors, except for the kitchen and a Western style sitting room, are covered with tatami mats. These rooms have only shelves, a low table and cupboards.
