Peace Park, in the center of the city, is a memorial to the old city’s destruction by an atomic bomb. One stone and brick building, former municipal headquarters, remains to indicate the destructive power of the bomb. A large new building documents the history of the bombing, and there are a number of monuments to the dead children and to the others among the 200,000 who were killed. These monuments seemed to me strange in conception, but one. a peace shrine, looks as if it may have inspired the person who designed the Vietnam War memorial now under construction in Washington, D. C.
I suspect there may be no relationship between art or the human spirit we cherish, and the impulses, set in train, which resulted in the destruction of Hiroshima and its inhabitants. It seems that foreigners were resident there too, of whom 23 were American prisoners of war - prophetic, symbolic victims of friendly fire?
