The wine industry in Fauquier and surrounding counties is growing by leaps and bounds.
The dramatic growth of the business on a statewide level is chronicled in the new Vintage Virginia—the 198283 Guide to the Virginia Estate Wineries and Their Wines.
Published bv the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the Virginia Wineries Association, the 24-page booklet describes 21 wineries front the Allegheny Mountains to the Chesapeake Bay.
Sixteen wineries currently are in commercial production and open for tours and tastings. The guide gives the hours each is open, types of wine available, as well as directions. In a preview section. five upcoming w ineries are listed.
By comparison, the first Virginia winery guide published in 1979 listed six producing wineries. The incentives provided in the 1980 Farm Winery Law added much impetus to the emerging industry.
The 1982-83 winery guide, which was updated completely and revised, contains new sections on annual Virginia wine festivals, wine and grape associations, trends and trivia, wine appreciation, a history of Virginia viticulture, a pronunciation guide, a glossary and a map.
