water-filled rice fields and gardens amid forests of cedar, bamboo and other evergreen and deciduous trees is a pleasure.
At 5:00 p.m. we arrived at our principal destination for the day - Shuhodo Cave, high in the mountains. It is about three quarters of a mile long, with a rushing river winding through and a vaulting ceiling which in the gloom in places resembled a white cloud covered sky on a moonlit night. At one place, there were rising terraces full of water, each outlined with shallow dikes. This miniature, many-tiered landscape reminded me of the mountain scenes of rice through which we had driven.
Altogether Shuhodo cave was an awesome phenomena, made the more so since we walked through it virtually alone, others having departed
