Random telephone surveys conducted Monday night by the Rappahannock News and other Arundel papers show Democratic candidate Richard Davis leading in the race for Virginia's U.S. Senate seat long held by the Byrds.
The same surveys give Republican incumbent J. Kenneth Robinson a comfortable margin over his challengers for the 7th District slot in the House of Representatives.
This week’s responses compared to the polls conducted by Arundel newspapers on October 4 indicate that Davis is gaining momentum while Robinson has dropped eight percentage points from his lead.
With elections just a week away, 50 percent of those contacted in the News poll favored Davis and 42 percent voiced support for Republican Paul Trible with eight percent undecided. Davis outpolled Trible by a two-to-one margin in the Washington area and held a slight edge in the WoodvilleSperryville area while Trible reversed that edge in Amissville - ViewtownCastleton. The candidates are running a deadheat in Chester Gap-Huntly, according to the News poll.
Combined surveys by the five Arundel newspapers — Rappahannock News, Reston Times, Clarke Courier, Loudoun Times Mirror and Fauquier Democrat — show Davis with support from 42 percent of those polled, Trible with 31 percent and 27 percent still undecided. The Democratic candidate apt
