Sorenson, a dancer, felt that by the combination of the two disciplines she could create a kind of exercise that would be inexpensive, require no previous training, fit into a busy schedule and—most important of all — be fun. The element of fun is probably the biggest reason behind the national popularity of this form of exercise: many women who get bored with calisthenics, who don't like to compete, or who can't invest in expensive equipment have found in aerobic dance a sport they look forward to rather than dread.
Aileen Barnes, who with Roseanne Sharp, teaches the 65 women enrolled in Rappahannock classes, said that she took the course herself and liked it so much that she agreed to become an instructor. "I've always danced,” Aileen aid, “and I was running, so it was logical for me to turn to r cs.”
