We were pleased at this, because we had conceived the idea as a chance for youngsters to show off and polish thfir writing skills. There were no prizes, just the possibility of having original work published.
As our office staff and general manager carefully read and evaluated each story, we each had the nagging thought that something was wrong. We were individually amazed at the amount of graphic mutilation, murder and physical brutality described in the children s stories. Perhaps we asked for this kind of horror when we requested the scariest stories children could create. W hat we had in mind was the suspense and skillful drama of an Edgar Allen Poe or an Alfred Hitchcock. W hat we received, for the most part, was the blood and guts of a Halloween or Friday the 13th. popular movies that enjoy huge sales, especially at this time of year.
