EDITORS NOTE: Last summer, students from the Cambridge School in Weston, Massachusetts, came to Rappahannock County and stayed six weeks at Washington’s Whippoorwill Farm, learning more about life in Virginia and the county’s rural residents.
The results of their interviews were published in a booklet, Virginia Odyssey. One of the students, Daniel Gom, went to a “picking party” with Rappahannock guitarist Charlie Tomkins at the Amissville home of musician Ronnie Poe, where he met and talked with several old-time and younger bluegrass musicians. Poe’s group, the Freestate Ramblers, is appearing in Washington on November 6 at the fire hall for a concert sponsored by the Rappahannock Association for Arts and the Community.
