Dr. Wemmer is a young zoologist who has been in charge of the Front Royal operation since planning began in 1975. Dr. Wemmer is faced with a problem that he sees as involving not only the Center's operations but the Blue Ridge community outside his fences.
"It’s easy to see what the deer population is doing to us.” Dr. Wemmer said. ‘‘They’ve eaten the alfalfa fields that we depend upon for pasture and hay, and they harbor parasites that have killed our animals.”
The Center’s reindeer herd, originally 12, has dwindled to six after deaths from brainworm, a parasite tolerated and spread by the white-tails.
Suggestions from groups protesting the hunt that the Center improve its fences or simply move the deer outside do not fit Dr. Wemmer’s idea of a practical solution.
