every winter, the national press carries stories of elderly shut-ins and the handicapped homebound who perish, locked into isolation by ice, snow and freezing temperatures.
Sylvia Kreitler, director of Rappahannock’s welfare programs, is working to prevent that kind of tragedy from happening here. She is organizing volunteers willing to become “telephone friends.” All it takes is contributing a few minutes out of the day to call someone who is homebound, either by disability or the infirmities of old age, to check on their well-being.
“It's really, really important in winter,” Kreitler maintained, adding that shut-ins can die from hypothermia, starvation or just plain loneliness. “We're looking for volunteers to do the calling and for names of individuals who need to be called,” she
