Rural Crime
Researched
Rural crime, which far exceeds thal reported for metropolitan areas according to the FBI, is being investigated by a research team from Virginia Tech.
This project, directed by Clifton Bryant and Donald Shoemaker of the sociology department and funded by Tech’s Agricultural Experiment Station, includes a statewide telephone survey of Virginia residents.
Researchers will call a random sample of these residents, determine if they can be classified as rural dwellers, and ask if they have been victims of crime during the past year. Specifically, the team is interested in reports on theft of livestock, farm machinery, or agricultural supplies, as well as burglary, vandalism, and crimes against the person.
