The leaves soon fall to the ground because a special kind of cell develops at the base of the leaf stalk where it is attached to the branch and gradually cuts the tissues that support the leaf.
The leaves contain relatively large amounts of valuable elements, such as calcium and potassium. When they fall to the ground and decompose, they return part of the elements to the soil used to make the tree grow. At the same time, the layer of leaves form a waterabsorbing humus.
The beautiful displays of color are characteristics of the forests in Eastern United States and Southeastern Canada, South weastern Europe and Eastern Asia.
In areas where there are tropical rain forests, the broad-leaved evergreen trees gradually shed their leaves, one at a time turning yellow and falling. In the season tropical forests, the foliage becomes parched and brown with the coming of the dry season. Neither offers the color of the Virginia autumn.
