William Ebert Coates, 78, of Etlan died Sunday. November 7, 1982, at his residence.
Graveside services were conducted Tuesday at Etlan United Methodist Church Cemetery bv the Rev. John Ellington.
Born April 4, 1904. in Madison County, Mr. Coates was the son of the late William Edgar and Aubrey Brankenbaker Coates and was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Haywood.
He was owner and operator of the Black Diamond Farm, where he grew fruit. Survivors include his wife, Bernice Finks Coates: a son, John E Coates of Etlan: one brother, C. E. Coates of Brandy Station: two sisters, Vera Tanner of Haywood and Fannie Carpenter of Etlan; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Additional survivors are three half sisters, Sally Frances Thornhill of Boston, Virginia Curtis of Culpeper and Mildred Matthews of Orange; nine halfbrothers. Robert Coates, James Coates, John Coates and Charlie Coates, all of Culpeper, Joseph Coates of California, Paul Coates of Etlan, Hughes Coates of Haywood. Belma Coates of Boston and Clayton Coates of Norfolk.
