Deer season opens Monday. We hope it doesn’t bring a return of last year's reign of terror which saw caravans of slob hunters prowling the county’s backroads.
The majority of the hunters who arrive in the county for deer season are law abiding sportsmen. They respect the property rights of landowners by staying far from fields and forests marked out-of-bounds by posted signs. They don’t skirt the edges of the law by sending dogs past the posted signs to drive the deer out. They don’t shoot from the road. They don’t take does out of season. They leave the whiskey bottles home in the liquor cabinet and the beer in the icebox.
But the majority of good hunters have seen their hunting privileges threatened by the unsporting few as silent protests against the abuses by the unethical have been nailed to fence posts and trees, closing an everincreasing number of Rappahannock acres.
