turned into oil paintings over the years. This past summer, she went back across the Atlantic, this time touring both Italy and France.

"It was like cramming a year's art course into three weeks," Manookian reported, describing with contagious enthusiasm how she’d suddenly noticed, like a bolt out of the blue, that one of the great masters used green for the whites of his figures’ eyes. “1 learned so many new things!”

Lois no longer feels the old urgency to drive to the city for a few days or a week in order to have contact, both with art and other artists. The urgency disappeared when Dan Lewis and Sarah Shor'-r opened their showcase in the town of Washington last year.

“Sarah and Dan and their Middle St. Gallery are the best things that have happened to Rappahannock County for me. 1 missed the contacts. 1 went through a three year hiatus when 1 first moved out here. I became a ‘closet’ painter,” Manookian added with a laugh. “1 had shown in the city at galleries and 1 missed those opportunities.”
