After each election, the political pundits take stock of the results and attempt to attribute some significance to the various percentages gained by the respective candidates.
The 1982 7th Congressional race was important to independent and progressive voters in that it marked the first attempt by the Citizens Party to bring its message to the people of the 7th district. For the first time in recent memory, voters were provided with a real alternative to the politics-asusual programs of Democrats and Republicans. Although we were outspent by 25 to 1, almost 5000 voters registered their support of our program district-wide, and in Charlottesville, the Toscano campaign polled 11 percent of the vote. Such figures bode well for the future of the Citizens Party and for people in the 7th district who recognize that traditional democratic approaches have
