Commercially, Virginia is primarily a feeder calf state. That is, 300 to 700 pound calves are sold to stockmen from other states. There the calves are fed to market weight.

The cattle business is a significant part of Rappahannock’s economy, although it has changed a lot down'through the years.

"Cattle used to be finished on pasture, at least some of them,” Owings said. "In fact, old-timers remember folks driving cattle back along the Sperryville Pike from Culpeper.”

There was also a “summer pasture” up above Sperryville that was rented by cattle raisers in the “flatlands’ to graze their cattle when lower pastures dried out in the summer, the extension agent said.

Virginia is the cradle of the cattle industry in the East, both because the first cattle arrived here from Northern Europe and because "Virginia” in colonial times meant the land that extended from the Eastern Shore to the Mississippi River.
