By GEORGE BOWLES While Virginia Republicans picked off the big prize in last week's offyear balloting, the elections proved to be considerably less than an undiluted occasion of joy for the GOP. Indeed, except for the narrow victory of the party’s Senate candidate, Paul Trible, over Democrat Dick Davis, the elections might properly be described as a Republican reversal of substantial size and, perhaps, significance.
Going into the election, the GOP help nine of the state’s ten Congressional seats. They lost three of them, and avoided losing a fourth only because there was a third candidate in the Eighth District race who probably drained off enough normally Democratic votes from Herb Harris, the party's candidate, to enable incumbent Republican Stan Parris to eke out a win.
In the House of Delegates special election, the Republicans had confidently expected to pick up eight seats. As it turned out they appear to have gained one. Two of the GOP delegate wins .were by four votes and 17 votes respectively. Recount requests in these two districts are considered likely.
