The question of why the Republicans were able to win a statewide U.S. Senate race while losing a third of their delegation in the House of Representatives is an interesting one. It is possible that President Reagan himself put his finger on the answer.
It may be that the election was. at least to a degree, a referendum on Reagonomics.
The districts which the Republicans lost were the Fourth in the Southside, the Sixth in the RoanokeHarrisonburg mountain and valley region, and the Ninth in the far southwest.
In the Fourth and Ninth, and to a lesser degree in the Sixth, the recession has struck with full force. Unemployment is high and the performance of the Reagan economic grand design is very much an issue. This was undoubtedly a major factor, among many others, in the voters opting for a change.
