Don Chandler took his dream of an architectural school to the Rappahannock County Board of Zoning Appeals last Friday and came away with a special use permit to offer practical instruction in architecture, design, drafting and construction.
“Space where one might experience creation through architecture" was Chandler’s esoteric definition of what he hopes to provide at Spectra. Space where students “can develop spiritually, mentally and physically."
Located on Route 522 at the old Bru Wood farm north of Flint Hill, Spectra is planned to be both “an adjunct to school” and "an intregal part of the community," according to Chandler. He intends to provide students with actual hands-on experience in buiicling. “something universities do not have the capacity for."
Chandler, a practicing architect for 15 years, told the BZA members that the seven bedrooms in the house on the 65 acre farm can be converted to dormitories. He added that he envisions a large abandoned apple processing plant on the site as "a catalyst for learning and instruction." Students can transform it into something they can use. remodeling the building into space for housing and teaching, he said. "I’d like to see the students build their own environment rather than be given their environment." Chandler explained.
