“Potting,” our instructor told us, “is not a tradition in this area." Our class instructor was Scottie Roberts Weist, herself a potter by profession. Scottie explained that the Carpenter brothers learned this skill within the past seven or eight years.
Tradition or not, the pottery produced by these men exemplifies the creativity and versatility of the mountain folk. Finding and digging clay for their po s, laying the brick for their kilns, deftly shaping and finishing an array of bowls and plates and vases — all of these are new skills the brothers have mastered.
