HAMMERTOES
Very rarely do we find the cause of hammertoes to be wearing shoes that are too short. Perhaps in China, where the custom of tightly binding the feet was in vogue years ago might have caused the problem.
Hammertoes appear as toes that are buckled at one or more joints. They may be flexible or they may be rigid. That is, the toe may be straightened with the fingers, or if it has existed for too long it remains in a locked position. The discomfort is usually from the rubbing of the shoes across the top of the toes (possibly causing corns) or on the ends of the toes. The actual cause is due to an imbalance in the muscles that pull the toes under the foot and those that pull the toes up (stabilize them while walking). Both types of problems can be corrected; the flexible hammertoes with a relatively simple procedure.
