It wasn’t until the youngest left for college that Manookian began to devote her energies seriously to art. She believes art to be “instinctive, intuitive" but also that instinct and intuition must be trained. So she went back to school at George Washington University for a degree in fine arts.
“It took me a long time to decide to make the commitment. When the youngest went off, I didn't just say, ‘Ah, ha! Now I can do it.’ It’s a very exposed position, being an artist. It’s not easy."
