cooler. according to Acrey Dodson. There were no trips to the water fountain; when youngsters needed a sip, they’d get their collapsable cups down from the shelves in the closet.

There were no physical education classes. Students had two recesses, one at 10 a.m. and the second at 2 p.ni. They burned off their excess energeis in the school yard, playing ring-around-theroses, drop-the-handkerchef, hide ’n' seek and baseball under the close watch of Miss Lucy and Miss Ida.

For most of the farm children who attended the county’s one and two room schools, a shopping expedition for new clothes wasn’t a prerequisite to the start of classes. "I had one dress Mama made for me out of a pair of worsted pants. Saturday, she’d wash it and Monday, it would be ready tor me to wear another week. It was navy blue with light blue sleeves. I never got so tired of anything as wearing that one dress!” Edna sighed.

As proved by the hygiene book on the list of five texts each child had to buy, health was an important part of old school days. “Every April or May, old Dr. Baldridge would come in his old ModelT or his horse and buggy to give us our shots. And he was our dentist. He’d check our teeth and if we needed any work done, he’d send us to Dr. Hodgkin in WarrenIon,” Edna remembered. Acrey Dodson has a favorite recollection of his teacher at Forest Grove. ‘One little girl came.running in and told that she’d seen he w ind. Miss Ida said she’d lever heard of that before ind she took all of us .hildren out to see the wind oo.” ^Edna Mills never left -orest Grove. She stayed "tehind when her class mates vent on to high school in Washington. “Robert Jacobs vas driving the school bus hen. Mama said ‘Ain't no laughter of mine riding a Dus Robert Jenkins is drivng!” Miss Ida visited Edna’s nother, arguing for the child vho learned so easily to ontinue her education past eventh grade. “But Miss Ida ouldn’t convince Mama. She usl didn’t like that man and hat was it!”
