The Southern Piedmont conference, scheduled to begin at 9:45 a.m., will feature a presentation by Mike and Thomas McDowell on how they won the outstanding forage producer award for their Halifax County operation. Also on the agenda will be discussions of hairy vetch and other winter annual legumes and grazing and feeding programs for cow-calf herds.
Mack and Rick Wall, Montgomery County dairy farmers, will explain how their operation won the area forage award at the Southwest conference. “New” crops, such as turnips, tyfon, winter peas, and soybean niilo mixtures, and weed control also will be discussed by Virginia Tech Extension specialists at the 9:45 a.m. meeting.
The Northern conference will begin at 9:45 a.m. with a theme of “Utilizing Marginal Crop Land Effectively with Forages.” Orange County dairyman Mike Yager will describe the practices which won him the outstanding forage producer award. The suitability of different types of soil for crop production and the useVf herbicides also are topics on the morning agenda.
