students in caning, basket weaving and sewing. Many people have mentioned that she trained some of her children in domestic arts which enabled them to find employment in wealthy homes in the city.
Because of the larage area it served and the addition of the older students from Flint Hill, there were sometimes as many as 90 or 1 (X) children in the two-room school on Piedmont Avenue.
In spite of the often crowded conditions, Mrs. Price noted that children received an excellent education in the small school and many went on to distinguish themselves in professional careers.
Highlight of the year for the Rappahannock grade schools was May Day, held the first Saturday in May. All the schools participated in this ceremony. A king and queen were selected and crowned and the children hadVames and races. All the childf^n helped to wrap the maypole and joined in the dancing afterwards.
Mrs. Price especially recalled the mayday exercises ol 1963, when School Superintendent O. A. Norton crowned Angela Dennis and Thomas Wigenton. Jr. as May Queen and King.
