(Continued from Page I ) munity for their reactions to the fire. He said that he had stayed with Amissville fire chief Paul Poling during the battle against the flames, providing information on what was stored where. "When he made the decision not to g'0 into the building there was some controversy but 1 think his decision saved lives,” Bowers said. “There were eight units operating here and they operated as one. It was very, very organized. I was impressed," he said. "If it hadn't been for the 40 mile per hour wind, they would have had that fire out."

Bowers reported that he'd talked at length with Poling after the scene quieted down Sunday morning "I learned a lot. I thought the fire companies were supported by federal and state grants. They’re not. They are solely dependant on the citizens of the county for support. They have to beg or borrow the money.” He proposed that Rappahannock's supervisors consider a special 4ax to provide operating revenue for fire and rescue services. "I’d like to see an assessment for the fire departments levied on every household in the county."

Fireman Released

Fireman James Stringfellow was hospitalized last Sunday after being struck in the face by an exploding shell fragment. According to Bowers, Stringfellow has been released from Fauquier Hospital but it will be six months before he gels full vision back in one eye.

The gun shop proprietor reported that people in the community have brought in donations of clothing, furniture, and cash to replace personal belongings that were destroyed along with stock and equipment when fire swept the business and adjoining living quarters. “The cash given to us we’ve taken to James Stringfellow,” Bowers said.
