RICHMOND—The statewide ban on uranium mining and milling in Virginia would be extended to July 1, 1984 under a bill introduced in the Senate last week.

The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Daniel W. Bird Jr. (D-Wythe), would also allow further studies of proposed mining sites in Pittsylvania County, where the New Yorkbased Marline Uranium Corp. has leased 40,000 acres for uranium mining.

“We’re taking a very cautious approach,” said Sen. Bird of the legislation, which he introduced on behalf of the Virginia Coal and Energy, Commission.5
