She teaches at a private, parent-run alternative school at Elkins. Rick is studying Environmental Science at Davis and Elkins College, and is Project Coordinator for West Virginia Mountain Stream Monitors.
They still own the farm, but left it because of powerful pro-mining sentiment in the neighborhood, and the perpetual possibility of mining around the farm. They explain that they were caught between their ideals and realities. Rick was devoting too much time and energy to his environmental efforts, putting a strain on his marriage and family.
In Susan’s words, “We were losing our family to beat that coal company...It just wasn’t worth it anymore. It just wasn’t worth it.”
DLM’s lawsuit, of course, didn't get to first base in court. “First Amendment all the way” was the gist of the West Virginia Supreme Court’s opinion. The lawsuit had already generated “damaging” publicity far beyond the reaches of Rick’s little newsletter, and DLM chose not to appeal.
But, says Rick, “It’s a bit deceiving to say that citizen rights are protected. My right to put out a newsletter is protected, but what about my right to have clean water — or any water?”
