Local governments looking for new taxing power got good news and bad news from the Virginia Senate last Thursday.
The good news for towns and counties is that the Senate, in a 33-7 vote, approved legislation giving them the option of levying a two percent tax on hotel and motel bills. Voting “yes” were Senators Charles L. Waddell (D-Loudoun) and Nathan H. Miller (RRockingham). Minority Leader William A. Truban voted “no.” Although cities already have that taxing power, only two towns and seven counties—including Loudoun and Fairfax—have the opion. Fairfax County’s tax is
