I support, in general terms, the goals of the Rappahannock Citizens for Quality Education. However, I believe I would be acting irresponsibly if I were to commit myself to support an appropriation of public funds prior to the review of the following:
a) Priorities in the field of education, as established by the School Board, and
b) The county’s revenue projections, financial commitments for the next fiscal year and the potential additional burden on the taxpayer.

The board of supervisors is the only arm of county government directly accountable to the people. Therefore, I feel that the board should continue to be responsible for establishing spending levels within specific categories. This is a practice that has been followed periodically in Rappahannock County over the years. The School Board retains the right to come back to the supervisors at any time during the fiscal year to request a reallocation of funds within the school budget. I will give a lot of weight to their requests in this area.
