The road sides are lined with stands, some permanent, some temporary, offering to those who pass the first and special fruits of the harvest: some late peaches but principally apples in great variety — Virginia winesaps, yorks, staymans, delicious, grimes, pippins and others; tomatoes, onions, squash, pumpkins; slightly processed and packaged products — cider and sorghum, honey (cultured and wild), apple sauce and preserves, especially strawberry, grape and peach. Then there are the works of craftsmen - baskets and chairs, furniture and quilts, stuffed animals and higher works of potters, glass and pewter workers, iron-workers, smiths and weavers.

Farmers and gardeners and their wives and children are there at roadside. In the meadows baled hay is being moved on fork lifts or in wagons and on the road hay trucks have begun to move. Trucks with wood cut last winter and cured through the summer are on the highway headed for the fireplaces of Georgetown, cut and piled according to the measure of a “Georgetown cord”. The alert Rappahannock watcher may see the county hunt moving across meadow, field and hill-side pastures, following the uncertain milling hounds or at a gallop when a fox has been raised. Pick-up trucks are out in numbers especially on the side roads, some with guns in the wrack across the rear window, some with sign of guns — two, three and even four persons in a cab, alert for squirrel, turkey, grouse, deer or even bear, only in season, one assumes.

Visitors looking at Rappahannock County and its people and its products and wares should know that they are being watched and looked and studied in turn.

Rappahannock County is a good place from which to look. It is backed up against mountains. Most of its people live in hollows, which give security and irrected perspective.
