I fully support our superintendent’s recommendations on the gifted and talented program taking place in all rooms and at all J times.
“For next school vear (1984-1985):
1. Restore budget authority to school board by stopping specific budget cutting within categories."
I will not attempt to oppose or rewrite the law, but I support this. I look forward to the school board doing their own homework.
“2. Offer all students use of computers in both schools, with the goal of requiring V-> year of computer experience for graduation by 1988 (this year’s 8th graders).’’
Basically I support this. I would need to see the figures and hear more about it to pledge my support irrevocably on this.
“3. Offer foreign language to elementary students.”
I have mixed feelings on this. I feel elementary school is early. Some private schools offer this and some do not. Your estimated cost could only cover a half of a teacher which could be hard to find. I would have to shop around my district for advice on this.
“4. Implement proposed index pay scale for teachers with reasonable cost of living increase.”
I have put many hours into this index proposal and served on the Index Committee and oppose it for the same simple reason. When I go to press with a 10 percent increase that is exactly what I mean. I domot mean to add 10 percent to part of a formula, which then creates a range of actual dollar increase from year to year. We spend a lot of time and effort to be fair in the consideration of all people. I do not intend to bias myself to our minimum range teachers against our new or career teachers. The index takes 10 percent and gives some 8 percent and some 12 percent. I don’t feel this is consistent with our policy. I would support an update of our present step increase system that is so similar to the index without the inequality.
“5. Study merit pay systems for teachers and make recommendations.”
