Don’t Look For Others
A fire isn’t the time for unselfishness — Hitt says it s every man, woman and child for themselves. She tells her children to get out of the house first and go to the neighbors,to call the fire department. They don't wait around inside looking for other family members or go back inside the burning building to rescue missing persons. They wait on the side of the road until the fire volunteers get there with the proper equipment to search for someone who might still be inside.
The odds are two to one that fire will break out sometime during the lifetime of the average householder and Hitt says this time of the year families should be especially cautious. When the cold weather returns, fires start in chimneys that haven’t been used in a year.
Woodstoves
The renewed popularity of woodstoves in recent years has led to an alarming increase in fires due to careless installations and misuse. Area extension agents and fire volunteers offer inspections, pamphlets and advice on how to select and install a new stove, how to prepare an old one for another year's use and how to start a fire.
