After losing to cross county rival Wakefield earlier in the season, the RCHS Panthers bounced back to take the rematch, 4-3, before an enthusiastic home crowd last Friday.
The split leaves both local teams without a clear claim to bragging rights as Rappahannock’s soccer champs for 1983.
The Panthers dominated the closing minutes of Fridays game, coming from behind to score three goals. “We were fired up for the last 12 minutes. Our boys started doing what they’ve been taught to do,” said coach Glen Davis. “They played like they know how to play. They played their game instead of the other team’s game—and I loved it!"
Vinnie Caporuscio "was the hero of the day for RCHS, earning unofficial MVP honors for two goals and one assist. But it was a team effort that gave the victory to the Panthers.
The Rappahannock boys came out flying after a spirit lifting pop rally that featured a costumed black panther (Eugene Grigsby), complete with claws and tail. In the opening 30 seconds, James Dennis took a long pass from Jon McCullough and booted the ball by the Wakefield goalie for a Rappahannock score.
The Owls recovered quickly from the shock and revved up the pressure on RCHS goal keeper Bob Baines, pressure that would continue throughout the afternoon. But repeatedly, Baines rose to the challenge, leaping and diving to block the ball from the net.
