Mae West, so the story goes, once said, “If you are forced to choose between two evils, you should pick the one you haven’t tried before.”
It appears that the Democratic Governor’s Association is taking that bit of advice. Confronted with the possibility that the Rev. Jesse Jackson may try, in the words of Charles Dolan, the association’s executive director, to “dominate” the party’s national convention this summer, the organization has warned that a way must be found to minimize his impact.
They fear that Jackson will deliver an “emotional firestorm of a speech” on the convention floor which will ignite sentiment for the liberal positions of such groups as the Lesbian and Gay Caucus, the Hispanic Caucus and other activist special interest lobbies. The result could be a stampede to the adoption of a liberal platform similar to the disasterous McGovern document of 1972.
