sufferers must eat two or more times the number of calories that the normal person ingests to get the same nutritional value. “My goal is 8,000 calories a day. But it’s difficult to eat that much! And I think it’s going a bit overboard. I probably eat half that on most days, 4,000 or so calories sometimes in four meals, sometimes in three meals with a lot of snacks in between.”
To aid in digestion, Greg must take 20 to 26 enzyme tablets daily. “That might scare people but I don’t have to take them all at once,” he said, his eye twinkling with humor.
And he takes antibiotics as well, as many as six pills a day. “I can build up a tolerance. That’s when I go into the hospital,” he noted.
The antibiotics are necessary to fight off infections that arise from mucous clogging the smaller airways of his lungs. For most of his life, Greg has had to be hospitalized for two weeks every other year for intrevenous antibiotics to clear lung congestion and control these infections. “But this past year was a difficult winter.
