splendid examples of the city’s plate - a pair of large silver tankards with lids, a pair of silver punch bowls with detachable crown rims, two gold cups for toasts, beautiful silver candelabra and other spectacular pieces of silver, each with a descriptive card indicating its date and provenance. The dinner was the occasion of our thanks to the people of York who had helped us. Robert Sevila, the Mayor of Leesburg, spoke amusingly and with grace for our group, expressing our appreciation for the great care taken to instruct us about the planning process in York. He made much of the chain of office around the Lord Mayor’s neck and suggested a similar token of authority might be introduced successfully at home. Before our trip ended, some one had produced a chain for him to experiment with.
