One understands immediately the virtue of having a butler to start and stop things and otherwise regulate the party. The Lord Mayor, and everyone else, is free to be casual, sociable and virtually irresponsible.
The mansion house, less than a five minute walk from the Viking Hotel where we stayed, is a splendid Georgian dwelling. After arriving promptly at 8:00 p.m. we were served sherry in the dining room for half an hour of conversation. The English friends from the city government and the town whom we had come to know were invited, as was the previous Lord Mayor and his wife. 1 was lucky to sit next to them for I had experts to answer all my questions. In all, there were about 60 of us.
The dinner was served in a great second story drawing or reception room which I calculated to be 33 feet wide, 60 feet long, with a ceiling 30 feet above us. This elegant room had a fireplace at each end over which were the coats of arms of York and England. The York coat of arms features a symetrical red cross adorned with five gold prancing lions. I believe the red cross in some way suggests St. George. Above the shield, the Bonnet of Maintenance is represented. This puffy red round hat with a brim, trimmed underneath with white fur, is a symbol of authority. The real bonnet, we learned, after much City Council discussion of what it would cost, was being refurbished.
On each side of the shield were represented a mace and a sword. The official sword in a velvet scabbard and the beautiful gold gilt silver mace were mounted on the wall beside the English coat of arms. These articles are two of the city’s greatest treasures and they were taken down and stored away at the end of the party.
